About Dr. Thomas
What it’s like to work with me
When meeting with me, you’ll find I listen intently to your experience, while giving you room to process, deepen self-understanding, and gently explore areas for growth. I’ll meet you with validation, empathy, and non-judgment. Relationships, including our relationship with ourselves, are important in finding health, happiness, and wholeness. You and I will build a warm and safe relationship that can be a source of strength and encouragement as we identify what you want to change and what’s in your way. We’ll explore your internal experiences (thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations) with gentle curiosity, building self-compassion, integration, and safety. We’ll deepen your relationship with yourself so that you can feel whole, safely connected, and authentic in your life.
Though at times I may offer practical tips to aid your healing, “problem solving” your experience is not the kind of work I do. You are not a problem to be solved. I view my primary role as being a supportive, compassionate guide who can walk with you on your journey, helping you navigate struggles and provide a safe base while you continue to grow.
For those interested in my specific approach to therapy, I use primarily Person-Centered and Emotionally Focused (EFT) therapy (not Emotional Freedom Technique/tapping), with a splash of Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) therapy.
Professional beliefs and experience
I became a therapist because I believe in the power of relationships to heal. I believe that bravely sharing your story with someone who genuinely cares can be a powerful and healing experience. I believe all humans are inherently worthy and deserve validation, care, and support. I believe in your power to know what you need to guide your own healing.
I’m a licensed Psychologist in Oregon and received my doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from George Fox University. I’ve taught graduate level courses and am currently a clinical mentor for doctoral students at George Fox. I’ve been working in private practice since 2017.
Personal identity and interests
I’m originally from Ohio and moved to Oregon in 2012. One of my favorite things to do is snuggling up with my husband and dog, while watching whatever TV show or movie is next on our list. I also enjoy gardening and try to bring the outdoors inside with my various houseplants. Inspired by the Great British Baking Show, I’ve developed an interest in baking and enjoy sharing my bakes with others. Other hobbies include crocheting and listening to audiobooks (shout out to author Fredrick Backman!). When feeling more adventurous, I dabble in pickleball, scuba diving, and hiking.
Generally, I believe pets are awesome, pleasure is important, food and movement should be enjoyable, TV and video games are fun, and that you are important, valuable, and worthy. You, regardless of how similar or different your beliefs and identity may be to mine, are fully welcome. It would be an honor to walk alongside you as you grow!
